PERIODONTITIS – THE “SILENT” NATIONAL DISEASE

Many people have heard the term periodontitis in the dental clinic or in the advertising for toothpaste. Less well known are the risks associated with the disease. Since periodontitis is usually gradual and painless at first, it is considered a silent disease from which almost every second person in the UAE suffers. Periodontitis is a chronic inflammation of the periodontium, the area where the teeth are firmly anchored. The inflammation is often not limited to the mouth. The bacteria and inflammatory substances from the mouth also enter the bloodstream and can trigger problems in other regions of the body. Medical studies show that periodontitis interacts with other diseases. These include diabetes mellitus, rheumatism, chronic respiratory diseases, heart attacks and strokes. The good news is that periodontitis can be cured.

That’s why it’s important to keep regular check-ups at your dental clinic and watch out for typical symptoms such as swollen gums, bleeding gums when brushing or bad breath. These can be indications of periodontitis.

HOW IS PERIODONTITIS TREATED?

The goal of treatment is to stop the inflammation of the tissue around the root of the tooth and to prevent the periodontium from deteriorating further and, in the worst case, threatening tooth loss. If there are indications of periodontitis, a complete periodontal status is made in the dental clinic. Among other things, the depth of the gum pockets is measured and X-rays are taken. The therapy is carried out in three steps. First, an informative consultation takes place. Here, patients are advised and the course of therapy is discussed. They are also told how they can counteract periodontitis through thorough oral hygiene and health-conscious behaviour. Where the gums and periodontium are inflamed, the teeth and gum pockets are carefully cleaned. This treatment step can already fight the inflammation and lead to successful treatment. In the case of advanced periodontitis, a surgical intervention may be required, in which deeper lying inflamed tissue is removed. In exceptional cases, treatment is combined with antibiotic therapy.

The final treatment step is follow-up care, which plays a very important role. Periodontitis is a chronic disease that does not simply disappear. Regular follow-up care at the dentist is just as necessary as thorough, daily oral hygiene at home. Dental plaque should be professionally removed at regular intervals in the clinic to effectively prevent recurrence of the disease.
