Gum Recession

Signs, Causes & Treatments

A gum recession occurs when the gum tissue around the teeth wears away or pulls back, exposing more of the tooth and its roots. As a result of gum recession, “pockets” or gaps are formed between the teeth and gum line, making it easy for bacteria to accumulate and cause disease. When left untreated, supporting tissue and bone structures surrounding the teeth can suffer severe damage, and ultimately result in tooth loss.

Gum recession is a common dental condition, but most people might not notice it because it develops gradually over time. When gum recession begins, the patient may experience tooth sensitivity, or he/she may notice that a tooth looks longer than normal as more of the root surfaces of the teeth are exposed.

Treatment options:

Dental professionals can recommend a treatment that is appropriate for the patient depending on the patient’s case severity.

In case of receding gums occurs because of gum disease:

Deep scaling and root planning maybe recommended by the dentist. Scaling removes all plaque and calculus (tartar or hardened plaque) above and below the gum line. With root planing, the dentist will smooth out the roots of your teeth in order to promote healing and helping your gums reattach to your teeth. Deep scaling and root planing procedure may require more than one visit and may require a local anesthetic if the patient is uncomfortable.

In case of severe gum recession:

Your dentist may recommend a gum graft which is performed by a specialized surgeon in order to treat a more advanced form of gum recession. It involves taking some tissue from your palate or other source in your mouth and attaching it over the area of recession. The graft and your gums will grow and blend together. Once your graft heals, it will cover the exposed tooth roots and protect them from decay.

In case the receding gum is caused by aggressive brushing:

Knowing the proper way to clean and brush your teeth without hurting your gums is very important. Our dental hygienist is passionate at coaching patients and teaching them how to brush and floss correctly to maintain healthy teeth and gum.

In case the receding gum is caused by ill-fitting dentures:

Dentures can be adjusted or remade by your dentist so your gums won’t be damaged.

In case the receding gum is caused by grinding and clenching:

The dentist will work on treating both problems; solving the grinding and bruxism issue by customizing a night guard, and curing the recession of the gums.

Should you worry about gum recession?

The gum recession shouldn’t be ignored. It not only affects your smile’s aesthetics, but also increases your risk of other dental issues. Gum recession causes ‘pockets’ between teeth and gums where plaque can accumulate and lead to sever gum disease and tooth loss.

You should see a dentist if you think your gums are receding. Several treatments are available to repair the gums and prevent further damage.
